Artist Statement

This book is built around five poems about a modern day Eve, long ago cast out of the Garden and living an everyday life. The book focuses on the idea of finding faith (not necessarily a religious faith) in everyday life: in its beauties, its atrocities, and even in its very mundanity. The images are not meant to illustrate the text, but to create a more dynamic relationship – interacting with the poems. River imagery references the veins in our bodies and alludes to the fragility and impermanence of our lives. Other imagery involves appropriated text-based imagery from an early printed book or incunable referencing the authority and weight of our histories, the pasts that we have to endure and that create who we are. The handmade paper, evokes a practical and earthy feel that the main character’s female voice is grounded in. The poems are boxed in by hand-scored marks, and the imagery flows around and behind the text to create a sense of depth, continuity, and perseverance.
