April: over and over                                             Amy Halloran

April was never cruel to me.
There was Easter and its pastel promises,
baby chicks and bunnies on the altar,
escaping into the congregation.
Even as I grew old like a vased flower,
the maybe of a tax return remained.
Then, one day, I mailed my government its dues
and the animal I’d been carrying for nine months
announced his arrival. What seemed cruel was beautiful.
April I love you for giving me my son
over and over again. Each birthday a chick
scratching out of its shell, a bunny bounding
into the congregation.
