The poem ‘Tongue Tied’ by Patricia Beers describes the almost unbearable results of a lifetime of keeping silent. The two-sided accordian book is hinge-bound with 16 penny nails and housed in a nail/mesh and wood structure. Unless handled carefully this book can easily cause physical injury and pain.

Text is laserprint on lace paper. Alicia Bailey’s photographs, which allude to bondage and repression, are inkjet printed on sumi paper. Objects and text initially hidden by the photographs are revealed as the reader interacts with this book. 4.5x3.5x2.5 inches. Opens to 18x3.5. Edition of 25. 1999.

Part of an ongoing series using cosmetic tools and containers as structure, this piece contributes to an ongoing commentary on the harms of the cosmetic industry. Lash Lure was the product that prompted FDA involvement with cosmetics in the 1930’s. This scroll book, housed in a test tube and wrapped around a mascara brush, tells the Lash Lure story.

Laserprint on Tairei paper mounted on mascara wand with wood bead handle house in glass test tube with color inkjet label. 4 inches long tube; 9 x 2.5 inches scroll (11.4x1.3x1.3 cm). 2006. Edition of 24 signed and numbered.

Lipstick tube housing slit scroll book. Pages open by twisting the base of the lipstick tube. Pages lift and spread out. Mirror attached to interior lid. Alicia Bailey: "Carole Jackson wrote in her book Color Me Beautiful that 'the discovery of lipstick as a teenage girl changed my life.' "This slit scroll book, housed in a lipstick tube, includes dozens of observations about the history, manufacture and general qualities of lipstick. The cloth covered box housing the tube is coated on the outside with red wax. A mirror inside the box has Jackson's words handwritten in red.

Altered lipstick tube sits inside a 3.5 x 1 x .75 inch cloth-covered box coated in red wax with snap closure. Aurora, Colorado:: ravenpress, 2001. Edition of 35.
