Peter & Donna Thomas This is an accordion book with 18 pages. The text is a quote by John Muir. The text was hand drawn in Donna’s “Freesans” calligraphic type face. There are 10 full-page watercolor illustrations of ripe Sierra berries. This edition was color copied onto handmade paper Peter made especially for the project. Peter & Donna Thomas A traditional Hawaiian Proverb.This book was made by duplicating a one-of-a-kind book that Donna hand painted and hand lettered. The text is in both Hawaiian and English. It is a proverb, "Love is worn like a wreath through the summers and the winters, love is everlasting." The book was color copied onto Peter's handmade paper and then accordion bound between covers that are wrapped with Hawaiian tapa cloth, a traditional cloth-like material made by pounding the inner bark of the mulberry tree. A paper label, like a cigar band, holds the book together. 1 1/4 by 1 5/16 inches. 10 accordion pages. 100 copies. |

Peter & Donna Thomas The year Donna turned 50 we celebrated by taking a trip down the Grand Canyon. The text, from John Wesley Powell’s 1875 book “Exploring the Colorado River,” has been letterpress printed on Peter's handmade paper. The paper is “duplex,” or two sided: the sheet is off white, shaded with umber pigment, and the back has a layer of darker paper pulp with petroglyph-like imagery onlayed over the surface. Both the front and the back of the accordion page are printed with imagery that depicts the elevations of the Grand Canyon. This image is a duplication of one of the original technical drawing from Powell’s book. The cover paper is the same as that used for the text. Each sheet has been hand painted and varnished to match the color of the ink used to print the text. 3 by 2 1/8 inches. 10 accordion pages. 50 copies. Peter & Donna Thomas These botanical watercolor renderings of native flowers found in the California coast range were painted on site by Donna Thomas. The images are color printed on accordion folded handmade paper which Peter made from cotton rag and plant pulp. The book is case bound in a full paper binding painted and decorated with stenciled images of plants. The paper is all Peter’s handmade paper. Peter & Donna Thomas This is a short history of train depot buildings in the United States. There are nine line drawing illustrations of train depots, printed in black ink on a blue square. The blue square was printed from small blocks of wood found at the site of an old train depot in La Grand, California, and was printed so that the color offset on the reverse side of the page as well. The text was letterpress printed with handset metal type, using 14-point Centaur for the text, and 24-point Old Town for the titles. The book is full bound in black leather with the title stamped on a wood panel inset in the front cover. 44 pages. 85 regular copies. 2 1/8 x 3 inches. Peter & Donna Thomas The book was made as an expression of love: love of material possesions, book structures, words of wisdom, complex ideas and freedom of choice. The text, which reads, "No Form of Love Shall be Despised," was taken from one of Eleanor Roosevelt's personal notebooks. It was written as a comment on a book she was reading at the time, as a statement that one should be free to choose whom one loves. The text was letterpress printed on Peter's handmade paper, using old wood and various metal typefaces, with a rainbow roll of ink that goes from red to purple. No two copies are exactly the same. The back of the scroll was printed with hearts that were carved in a linoleum block by Donna for Peter on Valentine's Day. The scroll is wrapped around a capped brass shaft. This scroll unit is slipped inside a hole that was drilled into a small paduk wood block. This block was in turn glued as a textblock into the covers of the book. The outside cover is made from Peter's handmade paper. It has a title label glued on the front cover. This label which depicts violets and the script initials "E.R.", as E.R. signed her letters, was printed from a linoleum block carved by Donna: ER states that in her day it was the custom to give violets as a token of affection to ones' lovers. 2 1/8 by 1 5/8 inches. 21 inch scrolling page. 47 copies. 2004. Peter & Donna Thomas The text is a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The original was calligraphed onto paper panels that were glued onto maps showing the areas where the drawings were made. There are 4 double-spread watercolor paintings of Sierra scenes that were painted on site in the Sierra while she was backpacking.
