Artist Statement

These books were created after my mother’s funeral. She died unexpected while at a care facility in a community that was my brother’s and that did not know my mother well. The priest was talking about my mother as a good person etc. When suddenly my mother’s best friend stood up to give testimony about who her close friend of 40 years really was. These books are about that moment.

This is actually two books attached by a silver thread. The first book was created with handmade paper dyed black in a wet bound structure. It has photos (tea dyed) of my mother as a young woman and leaf skeletons (to represent the passage of time). The second book tells the story above. So this is one entity about this event although there are two books.
