Artist Statement
This book is a tribute to my Grandmother, Cecil Moore Butler (who later in life referred to herself as “Cecile”). She took me into her garden and taught me about plants, planting, and plant lore. She taught me her own system of plant identification that I use today. She trusted me with sharp tools and empowered me to join with her working in her garden. Her lessons as a naturalist and her vision of me as a capable partner have stayed with me for a lifetime.
