Artist Statement
Vintage photographs and brief text document a couple’s many separations and ultimate reunion. The photographs opposite the text on each page spread have a flap that can be moved to show the couple either separated or reunited. I began Reunion shortly after the death of my father. My mother predeceased him by 34 years. He never remarried. As I looked at family photographs, spoke to their old Navy friends, and made a timetable of their life together, I found that they were often separated even during their 19 years together. I am intrigued with the idea that they are now reunited, at least figuratively, and perhaps in a more tangible form.

Artist Statement
Decoration documents the accomplishments and values of a mid century husband and wife. The title alludes to being decorated with medals for military service, or to dressing up with fancy clothing and accessories.
It has always bothered me that my mother’s obituary said almost nothing for her 46 years: just that she graduated from high school and moved away from the area. I’ve used images of her belongings to represent what she accomplished and what was important to her. These images are presented alongside, and as comparable to, the more public awards my father received.All images and text copyright the artist. All rights reserved.
