Text, book design, and production by Ezma Hanschka & the late Patricia Berreth-Gene, Portland, OR 1995. Hand bound and printed letterpress with hand set type, and original collagraph plates for the Venus of Willendorf on hand colored Rives BFK. 10 x 10 x 5/8 inches. 12 pages. Edition of 30.
Hot Flashes and Menopaussibilities was designed to offer hope, humor, camaraderie, information and fun to others in this transitional stage of one’s life. We chose the language specifically to include words, which are associated with aging women and sometimes carry prejudicial innuendoes. Our intention was to balance negative/positive views and ancient/current language. A 28,000 year-old fertility goddess seemed the perfect image to encompass all of womankind. We invite other women to join us in throwing out the old taboos and celebrating the possibilities of menopause.
