Artist Statement
My mother Betty was a wonderful story-teller. She usually managed to find humor in any story—even if she needed to embroider the truth a bit. When I Was Graceful is an attempt to follow her example and tell one of my favorite family stories, of an unusual afternoon’s fishing with Betty—and get a laugh at the same time. And beyond the simple telling of a funny story, I’ve attempted, with the use of reflective surfaces, to recreate the experience of being buoyed on the sunny surface of the lake, looking down into dark, mysterious fishy depths.
