My mother is a remarkable woman with more energy than women even half her age. She is 84-years-old, lives on her own, cuts down trees with her electric chainsaw, mini-farms, and takes care of those in need. Raised in a racially homogenous country, she has embraced the many colors added to the family tree through marriages. She is so very generous of herself to friends, family and strangers. She has driven cancer patients to radiation and chemotherapy sessions. She has been the sister to friends and when disaster strikes, serves as chauffeur, dog-walker, cook, accountant, counselor. She ensures her children, grand children and great grandchildren have opportunities she did not have and her only expectation is that we accept our responsibilities with a smile, and love our extended family as much as she has loved us. These precious family photos have survived many moves, from Norway to California to Nevada to Iowa to Washington. Looking at these photos with this book in mind I realized my mother, no matter what was happening in her life, has always had a remarkable, inviting smile. I am who I am and do what I do because of her.
