Artist Statement
Ina Weiss worked many years in the fashion and hotel industries in the 1940s and early 1950s, as a column editor in a New York weekly and managing a resort in New Jersey. She went back to school in the early 1960s, after having married and having three children. Mother Is a Freshman is a poem she wrote in 1963, feeling the lifestyle differences between herself and her fellow students while working towards an undergraduate degree in English at Hofstra University. She never finished her degree, having contracted cancer that year. She died three years later in 1966. The poem was rediscovered in some old family papers many decades later by her daughter. The childish style of the Star structure and the collaged copies of Ina’s English papers bring the two disparate aspects of her life together.
