Artist Statement

Photography is a combination of photonic and graphic, which means literally “writing with light.” Photographers interpret this medium in many different ways, especially in this exciting time of analog and digital resources

This concept was used in its most literal sense to produce photos that were expressly written with light. A long exposure was used in the camera in order to allow time for a single white light to be used to selectively and repeatedly illuminate parts of the image. The image as recorded with the camera is an integration of the light falling on the subject during the time of exposure. This allows for specific emphasis to be placed on the captured image, with areas of the subject highlighted in sequence while the end result is the accumulation of the whole combination of illumination.

This image was made at the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother in Portland, Oregon on August 15, 2007. The photo was taken just past sunset, and the sky provided the faint blue illumination seen in the top-facing part of the cross. A small white flashlight was used to illuminate the statue during a 15 second exposure. I chose this image as a powerfully recognized icon, one with great meaning to me.
