Artist Statement

When I was four years old I thought there was nothing more exciting than going for a walk with my parents around our neighborhood at night. It was a different world: the sycamores along our block became hovering giants, windows that looked grey and opaque at lunchtime, revealed people inside going about their evening routines, all picked out by golden syrupy light that filled up their rooms and spilled out onto the tricycles and the wandering cats on the lawns. Everything I knew about the visible world was delightfully thrown into question. I could hardly believe that this was the same world I found when I went out each morning.

I never lost my love for the transformation that night brings. Night photography reveals a beautiful and intriguing parallel world of relationships between objects and living creatures. Although night and darkness can serve as a metaphor for what terrifies us, for evil, it can also stand for what is mysterious and benevolent and a source of creative power. Photographs can reveal parts of the night that we would never otherwise see.
