Artist Statement

Night photography is something I’ve pursued for years in a random way. In college I liked to photograph industrial sites with black and white film. My favorite pictures were the ones with lens flare caused by the sodium security lights, the flare recorded on the film in scj-fi shapes. Night lighting makes most things look surreal. When the tonal range of color film mixes with artificial light, the result is somewhat unpredictable, but almost always more surreal and interesting. Menlo Park CA is where my sister lives. I was staying with her and working on a photographic project at Crystal Springs Reservoir. Everyday I passed the red house with the gramaphone-shaped flowers. One night I stopped to make an exposure. Right after closing the shutter I noticed a jet on a french-curve approach to San Francisco International Airport and made the exposure selected for Night Moves.
