A Juried Exhibition of Self-Published On-Demand Photography Books

WHAT IS PHOTO+BOOK? - Photographers have been witness to a dizzying array of ground breaking innovations in recent years. One of those exciting innovations is the emergence of “self-published, on demand” book printing services. You know.... Blurb, Lulu, iPhoto, MyPublisher and all those other proliferating providers as well. These books allow photographers to present their photographs in a high-quality, low-cost and professional-looking book. With the excellent quality of on-demand printers in the marketplace today, you can publish one copy just for you or publish lots of copies and market them under your own imprint. You can even get ISBN numbers and sell your books online or in stores. They also make great book dummies to show to the big publishers.

Every photographer dreams of having a book of their photographs published. No longer is it necessary to amass thousands of dollars and suffer the rejections of traditional publishers. Let’s explore this exciting new world of photo books. You’ve got a body of photographs worthy of a book. You have complete creative control. Now, go make a book!

ELIGIBILITY - Photo+Book is open to photographers both in the United States and abroad who have made a photography book via any on-demand printing service. Entrants may submit up to three different titles of any size, format, or style. Hard cover, soft cover, case-wraps, landscape, portrait, square, color, black and white. You’ll send one (returnable) “jury copy” of each book to the gallery for jurying. Winning books will be exhibited at 23 Sandy Gallery in March of 2009.

JUROR - This exhibition will be juried by Christopher Rauschenberg—a photographer who has had 83 solo shows in six countries over the last 35 years. His most recent book, Paris Changing: Revisiting Eugene Atget's Paris, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2007. His work is in hundreds of private and corporate collections and in numerous museum collections, including the George Eastman House, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Portland Art Museum and the Butler Institute of American Art. He is a co-founder and a Board member of Photolucida. He is a co-founder and co-director of Blue Sky Gallery where he has co-curated and co-produced over 650 solo exhibitions and 46 group shows. He is a member and co-founder of the Nine Gallery and is the founder of the Portland Grid Project. Learn more about his work at Co-juried by Laura Russell, owner of 23 Sandy Gallery.

BEST OF SHOW AWARDS - Four artists submitting books will be selected for Best of Show Awards. Those four photographers will exhibit four framed photographs each from their winning books on the gallery walls during the book exhibition. These photographs will be sent to the gallery framed or can be framed using gallery stock frames. More framing details will be sent with winner announcements. The Best of Show winners will be responsible for shipping their framed photographs to and from the gallery.

ENTRIES - A maximum of three different book titles may be submitted per artist. Entries must be received at the Gallery no later than JANUARY 24, 2009. You must download a PDF Entry Form and send it with your book. This “jury copy” of your book will be retained as sellable inventory if you get accepted into the show or will be returned if you are (sadly) not accepted into the show. If you live near the Gallery, books and entry forms can be dropped off at any time. The gallery will be closed in January, but you can drop your entries through the mail slot.

Some of you may wish to have your book sent to the gallery directly from your printer. That would be fine. Just mail you entry form and check and note that the book will be coming separately.

BOOKS FOR JURYING AND BOOKS FOR SALE - Each entrant will mail one “jury copy” of each title entered to arrive at the gallery by JANUARY 24, 2009. If selected for the show you’ll send three additional “inventory copies” of that book that will be for sale in the gallery. All unsold books—both jury copies and inventory copies will be returned to the artist at the completion of the show.

SALES OF BOOKS IN THE GALLERY - All books entered in this exhibition must be for sale while on display in the gallery. All work is sold on consignment. The Gallery keeps 25% of the book sale price. The artist receives 75% of the book sale price. Sale proceeds will be paid to the artist within 30 days of the close of the show.

Please note that the entry form asks you to specify a retail price. This is the price that you want your book to be sold for in the gallery during the show. Please keep in mind that this price should really be the same price that the book is sold for in other venues or web sites.

SALES OF PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GALLERY - All framed photographs chosen as Best of Show Award exhibitors must be for sale while on display in the gallery. These photographs are sold on consignment. The Gallery keeps 40% of the sale price. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. Sale proceeds will be paid to the artist within 30 days of the close of the show.

ONLINE CATALOG SALES - The Gallery will also publish an online catalog on the Gallery web site. The online catalog will not offer the books for sale, but instead will link the buyer to your own point of sale, whether that is your own web site or your online storefront sponsored by your printer. All sales resulting for these links are the responsibility of the artist. 23 Sandy Gallery will not be involved and will not take a commission on these sales. The online catalog will stay on our web site for at least one year.

COVER PHOTOGRAPHS - Winning entrants will be asked to submit one JPG of the cover of your use on the online catalog. Specs for JPGs will be included in jury announcement.

FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee (check or money order) must accompany each entry. This entry fee covers you for up to three different titles.

SHIPPING - All shipping and shipping insurance costs for books and photographs to and from the Gallery are the responsibility of the artist. Make sure your shipping box is sturdy enough to reuse for return shipping. Prepaid return postage and a pre-addressed mailing label must accompany all books and photographs.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds. Return shipping of books and photographs will be handled via the carrier of your choice but you must provide pre-paid, ready-to-ship shipping labels and customs documents.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE - The Gallery shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned books and photographs while in Gallery’s possession. The Gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for their loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the books or photographs), to the full value artist would have received from Gallery if the artwork had been sold.

AGREEMENT - By submitting to this show the artist agrees that images of selected books or photographs can be used to promote the show including publicity, catalogs and web site promotions. Copyright credit will be given to the artist. Submission of entry constitutes agreement to all conditions in this Call for Entries and Entry Form.

MARCH 28, 2009 - Exhibition closes and all books and photographs will be returned or held for pickup

THE BORING, BUT NECESSARY LEGAL STUFF - Representations and Warranties of Artist. Artist hereby represents and warrants to Gallery that she or he is the creator of the Artwork (defined herein as either books or photographs or both); and is the owner of all rights to the Artwork and their use as granted to Gallery in this Agreement, and has not assigned, pledged or otherwise encumbered the same; that the Artwork is original; and she or he has the full power to enter into this agreement and to make the grants herein contained. Artist further warrants that the Artwork does not, in whole or in part, infringe upon any copyright or violate any right to privacy or other personal or property right whatsoever, and does not contain any matter of a libelous or scandalous nature and/or any matter otherwise contrary to law. Artist hereby agrees to indemnify and hold Gallery harmless from any and all claims, including but not limited to, all third party claims, demands, suits, actions, judgments, losses, costs, damages (direct, indirect or consequential), attorney’s fees and expenses Gallery might sustain or incur as a result of Gallery’s participation in this Agreement.
