With the popularity of digital cameras and the high quality of today’s ink jet printers, artists and photographers are looking for ways to incorporate their own original photography into handmade artist books. These intimate books are an ideal vehicle for photographs as they can be used to create either purely visual books or books that combine text and image to form a compelling narrative.

This workshop is designed for photographers or book artists who want to create one-of-a-kind or limited-edition artist books using their own digital or traditional photographs. We’ll talk about concepting, photo and text selection, imposition and computer design considerations as well as practicing bookbinding and editioning techniques.

In this hands-on class you will bind four books, all using very versatile artist book structures that can be adapted for your future book ideas. For most of the books bound in this workshop you will have the opportunity to use your own photographs that you print and bring to class. No bookbinding experience is necessary as we will cover the basic principles from how to fold a sheet of paper to binding a hard cover book. All materials and handouts provided.
