Artist Statement

My essential subject has long been the psychological landscape. Wanting more feeling, and less detail, in my pictures, I began using pinhole and other unconventional and vintage cameras. I sought a process and materials that were sympathetic to my intentions and my ideas. Traditional photo paper felt too slick, too one dimensional, and too uniform. By hand applying silver emulsion to Japanese gampi, I am able to achieve a result that is tactile and sculptural, flawed but lovely. Each is one of a kind, unique in its characteristics and imperfections, bearing a kinship to the skin and the soul, the vulnerability and the mystery, of the human psyche.

Artist Biography

My photographs have appeared in numerous solo exhibitions, including Noyes Museum of Art, University of Pennsylvania, and University of the Arts. I have received fellowships and awards from Pennsylvania Arts Council; Independence Foundation; Leeway Foundation; Ruttenberg Arts Foundation; Photo Review; and Silver Eye Center for Photography.
