Above: Some inspiration for Resurrection

Equinox, by Paul N. McKee. 4" x 5" Manipulated Polaroid

Paul made this image in the small Moravian village of Desov, Czech Republic on a stormy morning in 2004. I practice several film manipulation methods during the Polaroid development process while in the field (extended development times--1 hour to 24 hours; heat application) as well as using lens filters constructed on site (natural materials and/or chemicals). As with most images, this negative was a gift exceeding my manipulation expectations. Photographs reveal much more than just the appearance of things. My photography is about the representation of a reality that is often beyond the visibly apparent—I attempt a dialogue with how we relate to the natural world, ourselves, each other, and photography itself.” You can see more of Paul’s work at: www.paulnmckee.com

THEME - This exhibition seeks to explore a renewed interest in antique or alternative photographic processes. Contemporary photographers have developed a new focus on materials and processes by turning to the history of photography for metaphors, technical information, and visual inspiration.

We are looking for work made by artists who are exploring photographic methods of the nineteenth century—either as a response to the digital age or simply as a creative tool.

MEDIA - This exhibit is open to artists working with antique or alternative process photographic techniques and materials such as photograms, tintypes, daguerreotypes, carbon dichromates, gum bichromates, emulsion on metals, cyano-types, collodian prints, toned silver prints, and much more. First generation works please, no giclee or ink jet prints.

CURATOR - This exhibition will be curated by Laura Moya, director of Photolucida, an arts non-profit that promotes the careers of emerging photographers. Laura has worked for Photo-eye Gallery, the Northwest Film Center, and the Sundance Film Festival, where she co-curated a documentary photography exhibit with Doubletake. Laura has produced various independent film projects and has performed portfolio reviews internationally. As director of Photolucida, she sees an astounding amount of photography on a daily basis.

PRINT CATALOG - 23 Sandy Gallery will produce a printed, soft-cover, color catalog of all artwork accepted for this show. All entrants whose work is accepted into this show will receive one copy of the print catalog. Artists are asked to provide a 300 ppi digital image as their entry to facilitate this effort.

DEADLINE & FEES - All entries must be received at the gallery no later than March 27, 2008. There is a $20 entry fee for up to three works.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $20 must be paid in US funds. Return shipping will be handled via the US Postal Service (USPS) International Priority Mail in order to avoid the customs hassles of UPS or FedEx. However, USPS shipments may or may not be eligible for insurance coverage. It is up to you to estimate the return shipping costs via www.usps.com and include that additional amount with your entry fee. Please contact the gallery with additional questions.
