People ask are you into digital photography? Of course, I shoot jobs with a DSLR and snaps with an iPhone. Film is still my first choice—any format. Latent images are so surprising and seductive so resistance is futile. Either film or digital media support mass production of an image, using a 19th century printing technique—palladium printing in this case—each photograph is unique, and can be artwork in a traditional sense. Mixing the chemistry and hand coating (sensitizing) paper is so fraught with peril, but the simplicity of making images with simple tools—a contact frame and the sun—is my big WOW theory!
Artist Biography
Since childhood I have been making photographs in my mind and on film. David Hemmings in the movie Blowup made me think oo-la-la which line do I get in? A Midwest liberal arts college let me ramble out with a minor in art. As a photographer for a university press I made catalog photographs of 5600+ books-definitely not oo-la-la.
