Throughout my creative career, photography has been an activity to investigate the essence of place and persona. Photography reorganizes, restructures, validates and manipulates our perception of time, space and presence. The challenge of translating this notion of essence within the preconceived ideas surrounding photographic representation is a difficult, yet, rewarding demand. The ephemeral experience of interaction and perception requires me to be vulnerable and honest—the photographic craft itself is rich in both these attributes. Photographs reveal much more than just the appearance of things. My photography is about the representation of a reality that is often beyond the visibly apparent—I attempt a dialogue with how we relate to the natural world, ourselves, each other, and photography itself.
Artist Biography
I was born in Chicago in 1961 and raised in the rural western suburbs on the edge of an agricultural community. My early years were spent outdoors in a vast rolling landscape traversed by seasonal waterways, railroad lines, dirt roadways and hidden paths. I learned the value of geographic navigation and physical awareness of the elements, through numerous excursions blessed with unbridled freedom.
