Il Duomo 9 was taken in Italy in 1999. The print is a cyantotype, a 19th century photographic technique. But this image is not completely the result of an older photographic process. It results from a hybrid process that includes very modern techniques, as well.
I originally shot this photograph with a low-tech Holga camera, which has a plastic lens and few settings to control the exposure. The Holga, requires you to advance the film manually after each shot. But, when I made this particular image, I only partially advanced the film between shots, which resulted in overlapping exposures.
Since cyanotype is a contact printing technique where the negative is set directly on top of treated paper and exposed to the sun or other UV light source, the final image is the same size as the negative. And this is where the hybrid nature of my image comes in. I wanted a larger print than my medium-format negative would allow. So, with my 21st century scanner, computer and printer, I scanned the original negative and produced an enlarged digital negative that allowed me to produce a larger print.
