Back to Basics 1: Sewn Board Binding with Sandy Tilcock

Saturday, May 17, 2008, 10 am - 5 pm

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is currently full. But, we are taking names for a wait list. It seems we always have a couple of drop outs, so you may very well get in. If you would like to be added to the wait list please send Laura an email. Thank you!

This is the first in a series of one-day workshops designed to emphasize basic bookbinding skills. Have you ever found yourself returning home from a workshop, only to realize that you have no idea how proceed from there; the information presented was so vast that you were unable to remember the particulars? It is the intent of these workshops to give the participant the opportunity to perfect basic binding skills and gain a working understanding of the processes involved in making a book. We will also discuss tools, adhesives, covering materials and other topics that come up.

This first workshop will focus on the sewn board binding which was introduced by Gary Frost. In this style the cover boards are sewn as part of the text block employing a simple linking stitch. As a result the cover to text block attachment is secure and the subsequent movement between them is smooth and unimpeded. Covering the boards is done after the sewing and requires a minimal amount of glue. It is not necessary to have a book press or other heavy equipment. The resulting book lies flat upon opening.

Sandy Tilcock has more than 30 years of experience in bookbinding and 20 years as a letterpress printer. In 1987 she received her MFA in book Arts from the University of Alabama as a binding major. Sandy began work specializing in edition binding and boxmaking for other printers as well as taking on custom binding commissions. In 1991 she established lone goose press, a literary fine press in Eugene, Oregon and from 1999-2006 was director of the University of Oregon’s Knight Library Press. Tilcock’s work is recognized for its impeccable and imaginative craftsmanship and design. For Sandy, each part of the process is hands-on, from developing a design and engaging with authors and artists, through production scheduling down to details such as paper decoration and adjusting glue recipes for specific purposes. The subtlety and refinement of her work keeps it understated, in keeping with her philosophy, “Do good work and allow the work to speak for itself.”
