By A Thread imagines a conversation that transcends time and takes place between two extraordinary women: Queen Esther, from the Jewish story of Purim and Scheherazade, the Muslim woman who told stories for a thousand and one nights. Both women spoke up when they could have remained silent, survived palace intrigue, and saved many lives.
The book structure echoes the never-ending, always mutable nature of storytelling. The text begins on the folder that holds the book and leads you into the actual book. Woven through the image pages, on the front and back of the book, the text is carried on tabbed pages that include areas of color shift at their ends. These note the passage of time, from night to morning, as Scheherazade tells her stories.
The architecture, decorative tiles and carpets of Persia inform the imagery. The gray shading evokes the veils of secrecy needed to survive, as well as the many shades of meaning in the telling of a story.Artist Biography
