Artist Statement

In A Toaster Story author Derek Pyle uses political satire to feature a toaster who runs for president. A 1920’s toaster houses two books, one written from the perspective of the toaster, A Toaster Tells of His Final Days and the second book, Washed Up Unhappy in the 21st Century describes the political candidate from the viewpoint of his alleged buddy. Each book is the size of toast and when the antique toaster opens to reveal each book, the “toast” flips over unaided by the viewer to further emphasize the flip side of the story. An antique silver toast holder exhibits additional books in this edition. Book design and graphics were collaboration between Cathy DeForest and Brenda Cornett of Jubilation Press and the author Derek Pyle. A Toaster Story is the first in a series of books Cathy Deforest is creating in antique toasters.
