Our emotions and state of mind create an environment just as rich and textured as the outside surroundings. Layers of meaning, of texture, of background, are created in looking out and looking within. A book naturally lends itself to an internal and external landscape with its pages on which to hide and reveal things, and a cover, which either resolves or complicates the content. Paper is a versatile, flexible, and ordinary material, ancient in its history yet able to be contemporary in its many forms. I use geometric shapes as a way to order the organic, as these are generally the shapes we view our environment through: a window, a camera, a peephole. My recent work uses traditional and invented book structures, along with collage and mixed media. I like that books create a personal experience with the reader and the scale of my pieces encourages interaction. I present the familiar in a way that inspires further contemplation and perhaps a better understanding from where we each have come.
Artist Biography
Emily Gold received a BS in Art from Towson University in MD. After college, she apprenticed with a nationally exhibited metals artist, and studied book arts at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Currently, she works in a wide variety of materials, including paper, metal and flour. Her artist books can be viewed at www.emilygold.com.
