Artist Statement

Spirits of the Wood is a work that takes the viewer into the mystery of the natural world, posing the question “what is real and what is constructed.” Were the forms that looked so like bodies or creatures actually there, or is this imaginary? More of a meditation, Spirits of the Wood takes a closer look at what surrounds us. The photo shows the outside cover and the first view of the stepped photographic pages of the interior.

Artist Biography

Roni Gross visited The Center for Book Arts and was taken with the notion that anything you were interested in could become a book. Her first letterpress printing class was with Carol Sturm of Nadja Press. The sculptural aspect of printing and the possibility of making multiples were ideas that greatly appealed to her. She went on to study with Daniel Kelm, Heidi Kyle, Barbara Henry, Russell Maret, Barbara Mauriello, Susan Mills, and Susan Share.

Her work was included in the New York Public Library’s show 90 of the 90’s, and the earlier Cabinet of Curiosities. She has been showing at venues around the country since 1994 and is included in collections internationally.
