Artist Statement

The Sketch Book is the culmination of a project where I sought to combine two personal passions – drawing and construction. The book is made from “pages” taken by cutting a block of plaster, in which a sculpture made from drawing charcoal had been imbedded. My obsession at the time was to figure out how these two activities (one seemingly frivolous and the other overtly pragmatic) combine to define myself. The book’s aesthetics are highly influenced by both minimalist and abstract expressionist ideals: both to keep it simple, well made, and potentially ignorable; and to have that sense of mystically secret “natural self”.
