WRAPPED BOOK SERIES (Stone Circle Site) - This wire-wrapped book was placed at an environmental site that I constructed for over a year. The passage of time and the effect on the book records the secrets of nature in this particular site in the forest.
WINTER PRESSING 2005-06 - This piece continues a long-term collaborative project with nature. Each fall season, over the past eighteen years, I have placed paper in various forms, sizes and shapes on the earth just before the winter snows.
The paper is marked by the process of decay and transition, secretly under the pressure of the snow thru the long winter months. In the spring the work is harvested revealing that particular winters secrets. The scroll pieces during the winter of 2005-06 hold a variety of natural materials. This scroll holds burnt aspen bark found after a forest fire clinging to the core of the tree, a mystery of beauty, without a hint of the process that created the unique patterning.

Mary Ellen Long was born in Los Angeles and lived in North San Diego County before moving to Durango, Colorado 27 years ago. A multi-media artist, she exhibits throughout the wide world of art. She received BA and MA degrees from San Diego State and has received grants from the Colorado Arts Council. Mary Ellen has been a featured artist at The Center for Book Arts in New York City and is now an artist-in-residence at Edgemont Highlands in Durango. Her book art has been placed in collections around the world, such as the Sackner Archive, MOMA Library, UCSD Special Collections, The Athenaeum in La Jolla, CA, Cerritos Library, CA, and the National Museum for Women in the Arts Library.
