Secrets and lies go hand in hand—they are virtually indistinguishable not only from each other, but also from truth—for children who have been abused by adults. In “My Mother’s Funeral,” and “Dreamless Sleep,” a wistful narrator, a woman with an oddly girlish persona, tells shocking truths right out loud. The fact that these truths erupt from the most private areas of life exposes queasy secrets and the lies one can be forced into, even innocently.
“Medical History of Ann,” a book about going to doctors, considers how privacy becomes secrecy. “Ann’s" experiences at the doctors are Everywoman's. Burdened by secrets that cause depression, “Ann” must participate in the maintenance of professional rituals and standards, the secret world of the doctors that largely prevents her from disburdening herself of the things that make her sick.
