Artist Statement

I have taken the theme of sense and sensuality very literally. My first book “Sensory Explosion” is clearly a play on the word sense and all its many forms. The bright colors the textures and the eyes all evoke some of the senses. In my second book I have used photographs I took of an Israeli Belly Dancer. She explained to me the whole essence of this dance is in its sensuality .The facial expressions and the way she moved her body made up most of the sensuality of this dance. The other part of her sensuality came from the costume she wore and the fabrics and embellishments attached to it. I tried to capture that feeling in the photos and the materials I used in this book as well as the other one.

Artist Biography

I have been making art from grade school through college. After graduating from the University of Washington I took many years of Book Arts Classes including Calligraphy, Bookmaking and Printmaking. I also took many Workshops. In 1997 I took my first Photography class at Portland Community College. I took two years of photography and then became a teacher’s assistant. During that time I started combining my book arts skills with my photography. I now spend my time using these two mediums to produce my artwork. I always love to try new processes, both with my photography and with my bookmaking. I have been combining a lot of new photo techniques and pushing the limits with a lot of the book arts processes.
