Artist Statement

“Scarf Book” combines knitting and crochet with calligraphy, painting, and book binding. It’s the first of my works to feature such an intersection. It’s an external embodiment of a current idea of mine, born from my daily life: the good things we carry within us can act as secret internal armor against wretched day-in, day-out situations that we are not empowered to alter nor escape but that we can survive.

“Bodlily Poems” is a pamphlet of two poems printed in letterpress, bound in foiled handmade flax paper. The poems are concerned with the way our bodies alter and affect the course of our days.

Artist Biography

Allison Heady is a hand papermaker currently in exile from the studio, who has turned to crochet & knitting to try and scratch that itch, approximately. She studied Book Arts at the University of Iowa, which is also where she became a foil stamper. She’d like to thank David Bowie for the material support his “Station to Station” gave to the production and completion of “Scarf Book.”
