Artist Statement

My travels often inform and inspire my work. During a tour of India a visit to the Saraswathi Mahal Library on the grounds of the Brihadeesvara Temple in Thanjavur inspired my interest in ancient Tamil culture. Other travels to temple towns like Mamallapuram and Chidabarum offered a wealth of imagery and ancient stories.

The accordion book, She Said, He Said, contains translations of ancient Tamil love poems. Parted lovers are waiting to be reunited. It contains three pop-up features. The center panel with the two trees on the island represents their eventual reunion. The style of the images reflects the style of that period. The lush colors and painterly watercolor and ink in the background are a response to the intensity of visual culture in old and new India. It is impossible to visit this culture not have a sensory experience.
