Artist Statement

For some years I have worked in wild, often remote, western forests creating a collection of illuminated field journal pages that chronicle forest experiences in drawing, painting and writing. The project began during my time as Artist in Residence in Glacier National Park in 2001. Many more of the pages were made during the winter and spring months of 2004, when I lived and worked as Artist in Residence at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon coast. Other pages continue to be made during the days and weeks I spend in western forests from Alaska to California. I began binding my field journal pages into a series of one-of-a-kind artists’ books called In Forests in 2007 during a second residency back at Sitka Center.

This signed, open edition book reproduces a few of the journal pages for In Forests. It measures 7x5.5 inches folded and 7x33 inches fully extended. It is pigment inkjet printed on 100% cotton paper and accordion bound.
