The Assignment

Create an eight-page book that explores the duration of time – physically (i.e. seconds, hours, days, years, etc.) or in some other mode such as dreams, suspended moments, or a time in your life (i.e. childhood, adolescence, etc.).

Artist Statement

In 1995, Carole Maso published “Ava,” a book that transcribes what takes place in a woman’s consciousness in the moments before dying.  We used Ava as a starting point for the assignment on time.

May 4, 5:03 a.m. imagines the movements of consciousness before dying in a collage of glimpsed images, sensory fragments, and word memories.
