Deadline for submissions: extended to Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Midnight

23 Sandy Gallery invites artists to participate in HELLO HEDI, a juried exhibition of book art inspired by Hedi Kyle.

THEME – 23 Sandy hosts two juried exhibitions each year. Our first for 2015 will be titled HELLO HEDI. For this exciting exhibition we are seeking book art inspired by the myriad structures invented by Hedi Kyle. A force in our field, Hedi has invented structures such as the flag book, blizzard book, fishbone fold, Wunderkabinets, pivoting panel book and many others. She has had an enormous impact on the book arts since the late 1970s. Long a respected book conservator and teacher, Hedi has inspired book artists around the world with innovative structures and materials explorations. Her willingness to share and her unique vision are unparalleled.

But, keep in mind, this is more than just a structure show. No blank books, please. We are looking for works that honor Hedi’s paper transformations with smart stories, strong concepts, focused contexts and excellent craftsmanship. We are open to works that adapt her structures, or works that expand her ideas and continue that sense of discovery that has long inspired us all. This international juried exhibition will also feature books by Hedi herself.

Perhaps this quotation will kick off your own explorations: "Many secrets of this visualizing device have been disclosed by Hedi Kyle. She discovered some of these while playing with paper toys such as the Chinese wallet and continuous concertina found in fan pleats and pleated stretch toys. Their tricks of articulation and mobility suggest the intimate relation of structure and action. She focused these sources and many other talents to create elegant, new book forms. Her prototype Flag Book of nineteen seventynine is now a symbol for artists' books. Hedi's tiered fin and fan pleated structures are both the toys and the tools for artistic work with books.” —The New Bookbinder, Vol. 10/1990

MEDIA – This exhibit is open to book and paper arts related works. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books and more area all welcome. We have a preference for books that have been created within the last two years.

JUROR – This exhibition will be juried by Laura Russell, owner and director of 23 Sandy Gallery. But, see below... Hedi Kyle will be choosing the awards!

AWARDS – HELLO HEDI will have four awards chosen by Hedi Kyle herself from the accepted entries. Three artists will receive Best of Show Awards. In addition, we will also award the Library Purchase Prize. This work will be purchased by the gallery and donated to the library of Hedi's choice.

ONLINE AND PRINT CATALOGS - 23 Sandy Gallery will publish a complete online catalog plus a full-color print catalog illustrating this exhibition. Entering this exhibition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes.

DISPLAY OF BOOKS - Here at 23 Sandy Gallery we feel very strongly that artist books need to be handled to be fully appreciated. Handi-Wipes are provided for gallery customers along with a friendly word about proper book handling. However, if your book is delicate and you would prefer it not be handled, please let us know and we will be happy to put a "do not touch" sign on it or display it behind glass. If your book is an edition you are welcome to send a display copy.

SIZE LIMITATIONS - All works are limited to 24 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is long accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.

FRAMING - Wall-hung work can either be hung framed or unframed attached with magnets and must include proper hanging hardware. If you are shipping framed work we recommend you ship the work with acrylic instead of glass.

ENTRIES - A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Entries must be received online no later than the date listed above. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified via email. The gallery reserves the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality is other than represented in the electronic entry. All submissions will be made online.

FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works, it is not a per work fee. When entering online you will pay via Paypal or any major credit card. You do not need a Paypal account to pay via credit card.

SALES - We encourage you to offer your artist books for sale. We are a commercial gallery, and we firmly desire to support artists with more than just a line on their résumé. However, we understand if you just cannot part with your art. All work for sale will be placed on consignment. The Gallery keeps 40% of the sale price. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. If your work is not for sale, we'll ask you to provide an insurance value on the entry form.

Sales sometimes happen after the exhibition. If a request to purchase artwork comes directly to the gallery after the artwork is returned to the artist, the gallery works with the artist and client to facilitate the sale. The terms of the consignment agreement herein are extended to govern such a situation.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK - You may submit up to four photographs for each piece you are entering in this show. Remember, your photographs will be used not only for curating the show. They will also be used in a high-quality, printed catalog, so make sure they are high quality photographs. Most of our customers are university and museum libraries. Put your best photo forward as you never know who might notice your artwork. The 23 Sandy Blog features several articles about photographing your work. You can read them here.

PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY – You may upload up to four views each of your three works submitted. Some key points to remember:

  • Name your files as yourlastname-1-a.jpg, yourlastname-1-b.jpg, yourlastname-1-c.jpg, yourlastname-2-a.jpg, etc. Your last name is followed by a HYPHEN and then the artwork number, which corresponds with the entry number on the online entry form. Another HYPHEN and then the a, b, or c letter are the additional views of that work. Like this: yourlastname-1-a.jpg
  • All JPGs must be 300 ppi, sized to 7 inches (or 2100 pixels) wide or tall in the longest direction. Images should be print quality RGB files.
  • Composite images are not acceptable. One view per image submitted only.
  • Black backgrounds on your photographs are not acceptable. Please shoot your photos on a neutral gray or white background. This allows us to present a cohesive printed catalog. (Black backgrounds are also bad because books lose shadow, dimension and scale on black backgrounds. Same happens when shooting white pages against a white background. We recommend gray for best results.)
  • Photos shot with a cell phone do not have enough resolution or quality for hi-resolution printing, which is important for our print catalogs. Please shoot with a real digital camera that has at least 8 megapixels.

SHIPPING – All artwork accepted into this show will ship to 23 Sandy Gallery. All shipping and shipping insurance costs to and from the Gallery are the responsibility of the artist and complete instructions will be provided upon acceptance into the show.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE – The Gallery is insured and shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in the Gallery’s possession. The Gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork), to the full value artist would have received from the Gallery if the artwork had been sold.
