Broadside Colophon: Abaca paper, hemp thread, letterpress printing by Sandy Tilcock. To purchase this work please contact Laura at 23 Sandy Gallery.
The Text Featured on This Broadside There is a Thread by William Stafford There's a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn't change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can't get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding. You don't ever let go of the thread. |

Helen Hiebert A book in the form of a unique lantern structure Helen Hiebert developed for her book, Paper Illuminated. Each panel of the shadow lantern features an alphabet letter cutout that casts a shadow onto a second layer of paper. The letters are in the Arts and Crafts style font designed by Dard Hunter, often referred to as the father of hand papermaking in 20th century America. Composed of lightweight wood and paper panels in an accordion book structure, with a flexible hinge that allows it to be set up in a variety of ways. Each shadow lantern is stored in an architectural handcrafted box designed and produced by Claudia Cohen. The colophon is letterpress printed by Diane Jacobs of Scantron Press. Hinged artist book. Handmade paper on wood framed panels. Page size: 4.5 x 6.25 inches. Box size: 6.75 x 5.25 x 4.5 inches. Opens out to 117 inches long. Edition of 25. 2010. Helen Hiebert A set of five paper building blocks in the shapes of vowels, each one featuring a unique handmade paper. Housed in a cherry wood box, with a glass top that slides on and off. The blocks, which can be lined up, stacked or scattered, create a visual and tactile play on letters and language. While a word can be formed without any consonants – such as the English words I or way – no word may consist of only consonants, without a vowel. Vowels create the sounds in words, and sounds are the basic element of spoken language. Five building blocks housed in a cherry box with glass lid. Handmade paper. Box size: 2 x 8.5 x 2 inches. The graphic design for this project was done by Shu-Ju Wang; Joe Freedman at LeafPDX provided the laser cutting; and the colophon was printed by Diane Jacobs of Scantron Press. Edition of 30. 2010.
