See Sow
Unique Artist Book
$450

These spools of thread were found at the Bargain Counter as is. My guess is that someone used them for embroidery. The title is in homage to the album Sea Sew, which I've been listening to pretty much non-stop for the past year.

Flax paper from the discount bin at Cave Paper folded and sewn into a multi-needle Coptic binding. 5.5 x 8.25 x 3 inches. Unique. 2010.

This book is currently in gallery inventory. Please contact Laura to purchase.

Fear & Storage
Unique Artist Book
$350

Inspired by a box of "too short to use, but too good to throw away" vintage pencils from the thrift store, this started a journey into my own collections of "useful" items. Hoarding is storing with the addition of fear. I am not a hoarder.

Rebound field guide in a stubbed, multi-needle Coptic binding, laser printed images, custom box with pencils. 4.25 x 8.25 x 2.75 inches. 2010.

Jump
Limited Edition Artist Book
$350

I wrote the first line of this piece many years ago, thinking of the people who lept from the Twin Towers. It morphed with a recurring dream and found a home in this format after I was inspired by heavy weights I bought at a friend's yard sale.

Silk screened images and text on Gampi and Zerkall Niddeggen, bound in a stab binding with custom lead-filled box. 8.5 x 3.75 x 1.75 inches. Edition of 3. 2010.

This book is currently in gallery inventory. Please contact Laura to purchase.

(1962 -       )
Limited Edition Artist Book
$125

This is another piece in the series using photographs of my late mother that my father gave me when I was a child. I like the idea the absence of photographs in an album, and the pages themselves being impregnated with an image that comes in and out of focus and clarity as the page is turned.

Metallic foil over laser printing, bound in a six-hold stab binding with waxed artificial sinew. 8.75 x 5.5 x .5 inches. Edition of 5. 2010

Mantra for the MIssing
Unique Artist Book
$350

Another in the series departing from images of my mother, this study in repetition, this mantra reflects the hope I had as a child that she was watching over me.

Silk screened images and text on Zerkall Niddeggen bound in a sewn board binding. 6.5 x 8.5 x 1.5 inches. Unique. 2010

Keeping Track
Limited Edition Artist Book
$95

These papers were used to track inventory for the Forest Service in an old Cardex file. They became a home for a short bit of writing about the train that cuts through the landscape out the studio window where far too many native youth have committed suicide.

Reclaimed papers bound in a board-book binding with covers from Hedi Kyle's non-adhesive slip binding. 4 x 5 x 1 inches. Edition of 6. 2010.

These fibers were prepared for amate making (after a visit from master Amate makers from San Pablito, Mexico) but were beaten instead into pulp to form western style sheets. The binding was inspired by my brother-in-law's Plateau basket weaving.

Twined binding designed by the artist with paper crafted from amate crudo and waxed linen thread. Custom box. 4 x 5.25 x 1.75 inches. Unique. 2009.

In the Bed That I Made
Unique Artist Book
$450

This album was never used for photos, but careless page turning as static kept a hold on the glassine interleaving caused each delicate sheet to be creased and distorted into a beautiful shape.

Vintage photo album pages bound in a multi-needle Coptic binding with patinaed copper. 6.25 x 7.75 x 2 inches. Unique. 2010

Members
Limited Edition Artist Book
$125

The racquet club where I work out used to use Polaroids for membership card head shots until about a year ago. These headless frames reveal an amusing look into the day to day reality of working out.

Polaroid photos bound in a board book with paper-backed reclaimed t-shirt. 4 x 4.5 x 1.75 inches. Edition of four. Variable images. 2010

This book is currently in gallery inventory. Please contact Laura to purchase.

Fat Chance
Unique Artist Book
$850

These belt closures have standard holes, as well as extra holes hand punched to accommodate the added girth of the book. Everything about the book is purposely overscaled. The resulting book speaks to the futility of the quick fix while allowing us to relate to the person who bought so many of these pamphlets, each one of which initially held great hope.

Reclaimed diet booklets sewn over raised leather straps with laced covers and double Italian endbands, painted edges and leather belt closure. Custom box. 6 x 6.5 x 3.75 inches. Unique. 2009.

Copy
Set of Two Unique Artist Books
$160

I love the simple printing on this thin paper, designed to use behind an original and a piece of carbon paper on a typewriter. The large word "COPY" becomes abstracted as it's mirrored and flipped in the folding of the signatures.

Set of two books. Vintage paper in case bindings covered with cloth-backed vinyl tablecloth. 4.25 x 5.75 x .75 inches. Unique. 2010

To inquire about availability of this work, please contact Laura at 23 Sandy Gallery.

Taking Comfort
Unique Artist Book

I've been using portions of this old blanket from the thrift store for a couple of years. I truly think that it's one of the most beautifully designed textiles I've ever seen, and "William" (the name written on one of the panels with 'liquid embroidery') was a lucky kid to not only have it, but to wear it out.

Reclaimed textile, vintage library cloth, hand stitching in a sewn accordion binding. With custom box. 5 x 8 x 3.25 inches. Unique. 2010.

Blank book. Paper hand-crafted from corn husk bound over raised 12 ply linen cords with laced boards, covered in leather then permanently fixed in an embroidered paper case cover. 5 x 6.25 x 2 inches. Unique. 2008

The artifacts of the original sewing reflect the images inside, which illustrated the stitching on the inside of an unfinished quilt top.

Relief printing on handmade paper made to size for miniature pages, bound, then unassembled and re-stitched into a link-stitch binding with leather covers. 2.25 x 2.25 x 2 inches. Unique. 2010.

Happy Hands
Unique Artist Book
SOLD!

A group of friends talked the organizers of Rosalie Hammer’s estate sale into letting us pay to get in early on the first day. Getting to know Rosalie by rooting through her belongings was amazing. She seemed to have been proficient and engaged in every textile art imaginable—needlepoint, tapestry weaving, lace making, embroidery, etc. She taught others and kept what was basically an entire textile arts supply store in her home. The cover and sewn-in samples were practice stitches she kept in a three-ring binder. A small sheet of hand-typed letterhead tucked into the binder listed her business as "Happy Hands Studio."

Reclaimed textiles and needlepoint samples, bound in a multi-needle Coptic binding with custom box. 5 x 8.25 x 1.75 inches. Unique. 2010
