Perfect Song
Unique Artist Book
$2,000

Birds thrill me, as they have countless writers and artists. Many of my etchings and other artworks employ bird imagery, the owl being a favorite. Having found myself with piles of bird images that I’d created for other projects, I decided to do a large collage book to celebrate the birds. Where would we be without birds to delight, intrigue, inspire and serenade us?  How curious and magical the sound of bird—as testified to in the book which uses text by Robert Bly, Emily Dickinson and Carly Simon. We can only listen in wonder and praise.

Accordion stiff leaf structure using two colors of book cloth; collaged pages of letterpress and inkjet text, photo etchings, watercolor, hand painting, monotype and copper foil stamping. 7 x 18 inches opening to 42 inches. Presented in a clamshell box created with two colors of Cave paper with original collage and copper foil stamping. Box measures 8 x 19 inches. Unique. 2009.

A poem by my friend Ruth Kessler was inspiration for this Flutter Book. The poem reads:

On a moment’s heartbeat, riding transparencies, you alighted, hovering over a sip of crimson, Wizard of tizzy, evanescence’s courier, sunshine-grinding featherweight windmill, Mercurial drop of emerald essence, On another moment’s heartbeat, you vanished.

Flutter book housed in a clamshell box. Pochoir and letterpress in silver ink, gouache and copper ink on Nishinouchi Natural Naka Ban, hand dyed with walnut ink. Book cover papers by Velma Bolyard from plants grown on her farm. Box covered with silver spattered paper by the artist. 3 x 7 inches, unfolding to 76  inches. Edition of 10. 2010.

My deep and enduring attraction to the work of Emily Dickinson stems from a sense that she feels as I do about the small miracles of nature and being. Her work is bright, succinct, touching. Small but large, it rings a bell with me, across time. She is a great, enigmatic American treasure. All of the images that I have used in this work come from my own garden and collections of found objects or photographs that I have taken (aside from the lone, familiar image of Emily); things that I live with, things that speak to me and that I felt related, for me, to what she expressed somehow.

Suite of twelve poems by Emily Dickinson with etchings and letterpress. Prints measure 12 x 9 inches. Etchings on Magnania Pescia & Rives BFK papers created and printed letterpress by the artist. Presented in a clamshell box made with Japanese linen and lined with handmade paper are by Julia Nietzche. Box measures 12 x 20 x 1 inches. Edition of 20. 2007-2009.

Blush
Unique Artist Book
$800

This piece is a tribute to a close friend who died from breast cancer in 2009. As the snow fell along with the tears all was either white or black. I could only remember her pink aliveness, her interest in dreams and Eastern philosophies, the heightened use of color in her artwork, her rosy blush of beauty The haiku, printed inside of the box, came to me as I realized that her physical aura was no more. Her sweet sparkle needed a positive send-off on my part, so what spilled forth was color. Her ashes were to be scattered in warm Florida in the spring of the year. I have made pink confetti of the I Ching as my symbolic celebratory offering. The book is light as a feather, in recalling her good spirit and the promised blush of youth.

Book made with hand-dyed Kozo paper and linen thread with hand-stamped text. 3.5 x 4 x 2 inches. Acrylic box contains hand-dyed pages from the I Ching chopped into confetti. 8 x 4 x 4 inches. Box made with Japanese linen, Ingres paper with letterpress, ink jet and transparency with silver leaf. 4.5 x 6 x 2.5 inches. Unique. 2010.

Thirteen Moments
Limited Edition Suite of 13 Etchings
$3,000

Inspired by reading Proust and his insight into the profound significance that small things assume, I found objects close to home: flowers from my garden, found objects collected over time, things by which I am surrounded daily, to use as source material in creating this work. It all seems so fleeting. Autumn approaches. Every moment counts.

13 etchings with letterpress, printed on Magnania Pescia paper housed in a specially designed double opening box of silver Japanese cloth. The marbled paper is by Pamela Smith. The box is designed by the artist and constructed with the help of Emily Sterling. Edition of 20. Six sets in special presentation box. Prints: 6 x 9 inches. Box: 7 x 10 x 2 inches. 2010.

Title: Artists’ Book

Made in the dark and icy winter, in honor of all my creative friends, known and as yet unknown to me. My angel appeared to me at a garage sale, years ago; small and worn and minus a wing, it whispered its message of age and authenticity. YES is all that I remember now. The images are solar plate etchings inked by the hand of fate. The poem is by Rainer Maria Rilke.

Accordion-fold structure on Cave Paper with original etchings on Rives BFK, tipped in. Portfolio cover of antique marbled paper. Printed letterpress. The typeface is Corvinus. 7.5 x 9.5 inches, opening to 203 inches. Edition of 3. 2008.
