About the Artist

Poet, critic, and performance artist Steve McCaffery was born in 1947 in Sheffield, England, and moved to Toronto in 1968. There McCaffery met bp Nichol, and through their individual and collaborative activities, publications, and recordings — as the Toronto Research Group (documented in Rational Geomancy: Kids of the Book Machine, published by Talonbooks), and in the sound-poetry group The Four Horsemen (with Paul Dutton and Rafael Barreto-Rivera), as just two examples — they became prime movers of postmodern literary experiment in Canada and North America generally.

McCaffery is the author of more than thirty books and chapbooks of poetry, including a two-volume collection of Selected Texts 1969–2000 from Coach House Press, Seven Pages Missing. His critical work has been collected in North of Intention: Critical Writings 1973–1986 (Roof Books) and Prior to Meaning: The Protosemantic and Poetics (Northwestern), and is also evidenced by the groundbreaking anthology Imagining Language (MIT), coedited with Jed Rasula. He is currently the David Gray Chair of Poetry and Letters as well as Director of the Poetics Program at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.
