About the ArtistDevotees of Curtis Steiner’s legendary shop Souvenir, in the Ballard district of Seattle, were devastated early in 2011 by the news that spiralling rents would force the store to close. Close it did, in February, but just ten days before the curtain came down, Steiner learned of an extraordinary space that had become available nearby. So the semi-secret Souvenir was reinvented as the “brighter and busier” — and eponymously named — Curtis Steiner, at 5349 Ballard Avenue NW. In addition to his own creations (jewelry, illustrated and collaged cards, folded books), the shop features objects found on peripatetic travels and displayed in memorable arrangements. 1,000 Blocks, a work now in the permanent collection of the Seattle Art Museum, features 1,000 identically patterned walnut blocks that can be rearranged into countless patterns. One hundred of those patterns (and other information about the artist) can be viewed at curtissteiner.com. |
