Aileen Bassis
Jersey City, NJ
Nederlands 4
I was at a residency in the Netherlands in 2008. I was interested in creating work about what it means to be a European. This book is about the multiple identities inhabiting the Netherlands. I took photos of newspapers purchased in Amsterdam in many different languages: Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Yugoslavian and Italian. I combined images of all these newspapers with fragments of photos of people in the Netherlands. These were made into photocopy lithographs that were combined into a unique artists book. The Netherlands have a reputation as a very tolerant society. This work seems very prescient right now because the social contract now is fraying, problems integrating the Muslim population has become more obvious and the far right is gaining power.
Lithographs folded and glued into a double-sided accordion book. Accordion book on paper. 11.25 x 7.5 x .25 closed. Opens out to 50 inches. 2008. Unique book.
