Pop-Up Now II
On View in the gallery: November 4 – December 17, 2016

Submission deadline has passed! Sorry.

23 Sandy Gallery invites artists to participate in Pop-Up Now II, a juried exhibition of pop-up and movable artist books.

THEME – Pop-up books captivate and excite the child in all of us. They come to life as three-dimensional works of art hidden inside the pages of a book. Pop-Up Now II is looking for handmade artist books that pop-up, move, slide, twirl, whirl, light up, or even sound off. One of the great things about book art is the opportunity to push the definition of movable books and tackle deeper subjects. It's easy to make a whiz-bang pop-up, but book artists are very adept at pushing further and rounding out the book with more context. We are hoping artists will be inspired to make pop-up and movable books that tell a bigger story.

According to Wikipedia, “The term pop-up book is often applied to any three-dimensional or movable book, although properly the umbrella term movable book covers pop-ups, transformations, tunnels, volvelles, flips, flaps, pull-tabs, pop-outs, pull-downs, and more, each of which performs in a different manner.”

MEDIA – This exhibit is open to hand bound book arts related artworks created as either edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects are all encouraged as long as the book has at least one interactive, movable or pop-up element. We consider popular book arts structures such as tunnel books, carousel books, flip books and many others to fit the parameters of this exhibition. Books can employ any medium, any style.

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS - This exhibition has added an option to submit a link to a video of your movable books in action. Since pop-up books are all about motion it seems like such an obvious idea in this world of YouTube and videophones. Videos can be up to one minute long, and must be posted on YouTube, Vimeo or any other video hosting site. These videos will also be linked on our online exhibition catalog. The entry form will ask for the URL link.

JURORSPop Up Now II will be juried by a team of three distinguished jurors: Larry Seidman, Jim Carmin and Laura Russell.

Larry Seidman, M.D. is an avid collector and seller of antique movable books, ephemera, puzzles, and pre-cinema optical toys. He has an interest in the preservation of these fragile books and works with a restorer to carefully heal these broken books and bring them back into circulation. He has been a member of the Movable Book Society since its inception, and has been a board member for the past 4 years. He has collected artists books for over 20 years with a main emphasis on miniature and movable titles. He enjoys "show and tell" at the MBS convention, bringing those old oddities with interesting mechanisms from upwards of 200 years ago. Currently, he shares the wonder of pop-ups with his pediatric patients and schools. His website is

Jim Carmin has directed the operations of the John Wilson Special Collections at Multnomah County Library since 1998. Prior to that he was an art librarian at the University of Oregon and sold books, rare and otherwise, at Powell's City of Books in Portland. He has a Bachelor's in studio art and Masters in Library Science from Ball State University, a Masters in Art History from the University of Oregon, and has attended Rare Books School at the University of Virginia with classes in bindings and typography. Related interests include writing profiles on authors for The Oregonian and reviewing contemporary fiction for the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune and the Miami Herald; letterpress printing and bookbinding; and curating exhibitions in literary and book arts.

Laura Russell, owner of 23 Sandy Gallery and a book artist herself, is also serving on the jury team.

PRIZES/AWARDS – 23 Sandy Gallery will fund $500 for a Purchase Prize Award plus will present three Best of Show Awards. ONLINE AND PRINT CATALOGS - 23 Sandy Gallery will publish a complete online catalog plus a full-color print catalog illustrating this exhibition. Entering this exhibition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes.

DISPLAY OF BOOKS - Here at 23 Sandy Gallery we feel very strongly that artist books need to be handled to be fully appreciated. Handi-Wipes are provided for gallery customers along with a friendly word about proper book handling. However, if your book is delicate and you would prefer it not be handled, please let us know and we will be happy to put a "do not touch" sign on it or display it behind glass. If your book is an edition you are welcome to send a display copy.

SIZE LIMITATIONS - All works are limited to 24 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is long accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.

ENTRIES - A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Work must be no more that five years old. Entries must be received online no later than the date listed above. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified via email. The gallery reserves the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality is other than represented in the electronic entry. All submissions will be made online.

FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works, it is not a per work fee. When entering online you will pay via Paypal or any major credit card. You do not need a Paypal account to pay via credit card.

SALES - All work submitted must be for sale. We are a commercial gallery, and we firmly desire to support artists with more than just a line on their résumé. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. Sales sometimes happen after the exhibition. If a request to purchase artwork comes directly to the gallery after the artwork is returned to the artist, the gallery works with the artist and client to facilitate the sale. The terms of the consignment agreement herein are extended to govern such a situation.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK - You may submit up to four photographs for each piece you are entering in this show. Remember, your photographs will be used not only for curating the show. They will also be used in a high-quality, printed catalog, so make sure they are high quality photographs. Most of our customers are university and museum libraries. Put your best photo forward as you never know who might notice your artwork. The 23 Sandy Blog features several articles about photographing your work. You can read them here.

PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY – You may upload up to four views each of your three works submitted. Some key points to remember:

  • Name your files as yourlastname-1-a.jpg, yourlastname-1-b.jpg, yourlastname-1-c.jpg, yourlastname-2-a.jpg, etc. Your last name is followed by a HYPHEN and then the artwork number, which corresponds with the entry number on the online entry form. Another HYPHEN and then the a, b, or c letter are the additional views of that work. Like this: yourlastname-1-a.jpg
  • All JPGs must be 300 ppi, sized to 7 inches (or 2100 pixels) wide or tall in the longest direction. Images should be print quality RGB files.
  • Composite images are not acceptable. One view per image submitted only.
  • Black backgrounds on your photographs are not acceptable. Please shoot your photos on a neutral gray or white background. This allows us to present a cohesive printed catalog. (Black backgrounds are also bad because books lose shadow, dimension and scale on black backgrounds. Same happens when shooting white pages against a white background. We recommend gray for best results.)
  • Photos shot with a cell phone do not have enough resolution or quality for hi-resolution printing, which is important for our print catalogs. Please shoot with a real digital camera that has at least 8 megapixels.

SHIPPING – All artwork accepted into this show will ship to 23 Sandy Gallery. All shipping and shipping insurance costs to and from the Gallery are the responsibility of the artist and complete instructions will be provided upon acceptance into the show.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds via Paypal.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE – The Gallery is insured and shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in the Gallery’s possession. The Gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork), to the full value artist would have received from the Gallery if the artwork had been sold.
