Rattenkönig
This is a picture book with pop-ups, cutouts, and a movable box structure, telling the story of a little girl who gets kidnapped by rats after her father's death. The concept of the 'Rattenkönig' (a group of rats who get knotted together at the tail while burrowed together underground) is used as a metaphor for the grief experience and the search for connection out of absence.
The two white lozenge-shaped tabs are attached to the pulley system inside the box; pulling them away from each other makes each of the die-cut layers move about 1/3" on their tracks towards the center of the box.
Pen-and-ink drawings with two pop-up spreads, three cutouts, and a central 3D box structure with moving layers. 24 pages. 5.5 x 6 x 3 inches. 2010. Unique.
