New Museum of Nature and Industry

For years I’ve collected antique science books, and have been enamored of their precise illustrations of organisms and machinery. Working on the Small Museum only whetted my appetite for lovely juxtapositions: flower anatomy, for instance, with cross-sections of the Westinghouse air brake. Printing onto loose transparencies allows for endless overlaps and recombinations. Acetate’s tough, diaphanous qualities make it perfect for a house of cards. Once folded, it remains springy, resisting flattening in either direction, so that accordion-pleated pages make strong structural elements. Japanese repair tissue, on the other hand, provides well-behaved hinges without giving up transparency.

Loose transparent folios in a wood codex-shaped box, hinged with Tyvek and repair tissue, with magnetic closure. Photocopies on acetate, creased into accordion folds or hinged with repair tissue; maple, poplar, and birch aircraft plywood. Many pages. 3.25 x 3 x 2 inches. Unique.
