Yi Costume Festival, from We are Tiger Dragon People series

25 of the 55 minority tribes of China reside in Yunnan Province and comprise only 8% of the nation’s population. My mother is a member of the black Yi tribe.

Nearly two thousand Yi gather on a hillside in Northern Yunnan for their annual costume festival. Their embroidery contains symbols of Yi myths and legends. Long ago, there was a young Yi couple in love. They met in the forest, and in pursuit of the girl, the Devil King tried to kill the boy. An old man taught the girl to make the sound of a cock crowing to call out the sun and drive the Devil away, saving the village. The Yi decided to show their gratitude for the cock that saved their life by making cockscomb hats, believing they would help bring luckiness, brightness, safety and happiness to the world.
