Pop-Up Now!

Peace on Earth

I designed these two artist books in one to express the human longing for a peaceful existence. A friend, Mabel Dean, helped with the art. I constructed a pop-up book from a single large piece of paper, printed on both sides, then cut and folded to create a six-page structure without adhesives or sewing. The pages contain symbols from the world’s three major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I made a sterling silver dove to hold open the pop-up book for display. Using one piece of paper to represent the three religions symbolizes their evolution from a common patriarch, Abraham, and their worship of a common God. The cutting and folding represents their separation from their common bonds. The pop-up book fits within a pocket on the cover of the second book—a concertina with prayers for peace from the holy books of the three religions.

Pop-up book constructed from a single sheet of paper and contained in the cover pocket of a concertina book. Original art manipulated using Photoshop Elements and printed on Canson Mi-Teintes paper with an Epson R2400. Text printed on Strathmore 500 Series paper with the same printer.  Folio covered with Nepali Lokta. Handmade sterling silver embellishment. 6 pages. 5.75 x 3.75 x .372 inches. 2005. Edition of 50.
