Artist Statement

There is within an urban environment a distinct beauty and decay, strength and vulnerability inhabiting the physical structures and the populace that composes an emotive patina. Mixed media concrete sculptures and works on panel explore the visual metaphor of that patina.

Concrete illustrates, strength, time and permanence, yet is vulnerable, even fragile. The sculptural work plays on this duality. The weight and mass of the block format is countered by the incorporation of glass, allowing for the intrusion of fragility. Surface treatment, through collage and oil paint, elicit the emotional patina. Incorporation of detritus from the streets is common to both sculpture and painting. The sculpture alludes to the physical structures of society. Within each are a distinct strength, vulnerability and beauty.

The painting focuses on conversations, the dilemmas, and the emotional personality of individuals within a social structure. A painting will condense voices, sounds, emotions or time periods. The use of collage and oil paint repeat forming a visual connection between painting and sculpture. The painting process is spontaneous; an interaction between materials, color, line and surface treatment.

Artist Biography

Born and raised in Iowa, Linda moved to southern California in 1975. There she received a BFA in Ceramics from Long Beach State. A slow migration northward produced an MFA in Textile Design from University of California, Davis, and lastly, a move to Portland. Here, she continues her studio work, as painter, sculptor and book artist.

Her work is in private and public collections including UCLA Fine Art Library and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
